Poople begins with a four-letter word. You need to work your way to POOP. Each move lets you change just one letter. The result must be a real word. The new word also has to be a real word. So, you cannot simply change the starting word into POOP. You have to find the words in between.
The daily puzzle gives you a new starting word, so yesterday's answer will not help much today.
The dictionary is not the problem by itself. The real trouble comes when a perfectly good word has nowhere useful to go.
Look at the four letters and try changing one position at a time. Do not worry about reaching POOP immediately. First, find a word that gives you more choices.
For example, you could have a chain like COLD → CORD → CARD → CARE → CORE → POPE → POOP. Only one letter changes in each step. The trick is choosing a word that keeps the next move possible.
You can try more word chains without waiting for the next daily puzzle. It is a good place to test words that you are not sure about. You can also use it to find new four-letter connections.
What if you cannot find a good second word?
Try another letter position. You may need to change the first, second, or last letter instead of forcing the move you noticed first.
Check each letter before deciding.
Try changing A, E, or O when you run out of ideas. Vowels can open up several common words.
Do not leave POOP until the very end. Finding a word close to the target can give you something to work toward.
Once you reach POOP, look back at your chain. You may spot a shorter route that you missed the first time.
