Deep water and sand traps are placed around the hole to make it harder. You must cross water gaps with enough speed to land on solid ground. Sand will stop your ball immediately and reset your momentum to zero. If you move off the edge of the path, the ball is lost in the mist. You must pick the right card for every situation.
